New wheels are a great way to improve your vehicle’s looks and, depending on the set you buy, can also improve your fuel economy and performance on- or off-road. While the wheel aftermarket tends to lean toward larger sizes, think twice before falling into the “bigger is better” camp.

Many sedans, crossovers, and smaller SUVs ride on 17-inch wheels or can be easily upgraded from a 15- or 16-inch wheel. Using a 17-inch wheel usually means more ride comfort, less weight, and less cost than wheels that are 19 inches or larger. We’ve picked four wheels from major brands like OZ and Enkei, plus a fifth wheel from a small brand that specializes in off-road driving.

BBS has been an industry leader since its founding in the early 1970s. The German company initially produced wheels for motorsport before turning to road-going sports cars. The LM is among the most popular BBS wheels since it entered production in the mid-1990s. This two-piece aluminum die-forged wheel is made in Japan with the weight optimized for each width and diameter. The LM has a striking split 10-spoke design and comes in a variety of finishes, all protected by a clear top coat to resist chips and general wear. 

Track days and racing activity call for a lighter wheel that is also strong enough to endure the extra stresses placed on it in the heat of the moment. OZ Racing’s Ultraleggera is a great option, starting with its name which translates to “ultra-light” thanks to its alloy makeup. Being a low-pressure cast wheel, the Ultraleggera isn’t as durable as one that is forged or flow formed, but it carries several important certifications for track use. Owners say their Ultraleggera wheels can handle road obstacles like potholes without issue and are quite durable on-track. 

Enkei wheels are produced in Thailand and offer a range of solidly built wheels at great value. If you’re aiming less for “show off on the strip” than you are “I just want my daily driver to look a little nicer,” the RPF1 may be exactly what you want. The one-piece RPF1 makes for a great replacement for your stock wheels. It turns heads, often improves handling thanks to its width, and is known for its strength and durability. 

American Racing’s AR172 Baja is a great wheel for those who want a more rugged look for their truck or SUV but aren’t going to be off-roading all the time. Capable of good off-road performance with the right tires, the Baja is often praised by consumers mounting them to work trucks and driving in all conditions during all seasons. The Baja also comes with a limited lifetime structural warranty and one-year warranty on this finish.  

The Black Rhino Sandstorm is a one-piece rotary forged aluminum alloy wheel for serious off-roading offered in many sizes and widths in a variety of diameters.
