With the official debut of the all-new Jeep Grand Wagoneer and Wagoneer models, the off-road SUV specialist aims to elevate the position of the brand with the seven-barred grille. And while the automaker has released a significant amount of new information for us all to chew on regarding these new luxury-oriented offerings, we’re here to help break it all down. This is everything you need to know about the V8 powertrains that will underpin both the 2022 Jeep Wagoneer and upscale Grand Wagoneer models.

Like several other SUVs in the segment, the new 2022 Jeep Wagoneer is exclusively powered by a V8 engine. More specifically, the new Wagoneer utilizes a standard 5.7L Hemi V8 engine, which produces a stout 392 horsepower and 404 lb-ft of torque. That V8 isn’t working alone however, as this SUV features the first application of Jeep’s next-gen 48V eTorque hybrid system.

Fuel economy is TBD. But expect it to be class leading, if not close to it.

This system replaces a traditional alternator with a belt-driven motor generator unit, which feeds a 48-volt battery pack. This new eTorque hybrid system helps to smooth out the jarring experience of modern start/stop systems, while also serving as a torque filler for the engine in certain driving situations. In fact, the hybrid system is able to lay down up to 130 lb-ft of torque on throttle tip-in. Other fuel-saving measures include variable camshaft timing and cylinder deactivation systems. A TorqueFlite eight-speed automatic transmission and a 3.21 axle ratio are also standard.

Like its sibling, the 2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer is also exclusively available with a V8 engine. This time the 6.4L V8 can be found under the hood, which features some unique touches to improve low-end torque. These adjustments include a new intake and exhaust manifold layout, as well a repositioned air box found on the right side of the engine bay. The end result is 471 horsepower and 455 lb-ft of torque. There is no hybrid system to deal with here, but the SUV still features the fuel-saving cylinder deactivation and variable camshaft timing systems. Thanks to some help from the 3.92 rear axle ratio, Jeep says the SUV is able to go from 0-60 mph in just 6.0 seconds. A hauler in more than one sense of the word, the 2022 Jeep Wagoneer lineup also features a class-leading tow rating of up to 10,000 pounds across both models. The TorqueFlite eight-speed automatic transmission is also utilized by the Grand Wagonner.

While the Jeep Grand Wagoneer and Wagoneer models don’t offer an extensive list of powertrain options, the SUVs do bring the V8 power that we hoped for. That said, there is good reason to believe that a certain supercharged 6.2L V8 could end up stuffed inside one of these SUVs in the future. For now however, we’ll have to “settle” for the 5.7L and 6.4L offerings.

The E-Torque pulley bearing is faulty. Mine seized, snapped, started alternator fire. I was number 50+ back order list. 60 days in the shop. FCA/Jack Powell Dealership down played and claims “no indication of fire” and ‘belt smoke’ despite fire photos. Stay away from E-Torque and FCA’ Ram E-Torque hemi-engine combo!
