Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness director Sam Raimi says there's been discussion of another sequel to his 1990 cult classic Darkman.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness director Sam Raimi says that a sequel to Darkman, his 1990 take on the superhero genre, is being discussed at Universal. Today, Raimi is probably best known for his work in the world of Marvel, having also directed the Tobey Maguire Spider-Man trilogy, but Darkman is where he cut his teeth in the vigilante crime-fighter genre. It was also his first major studio film. The movie stars Liam Neeson as the titular hero alongside Frances McDormand in an early role.

Neeson plays Dr. Peyton Westlake, a man that can alter his appearance and is seeking vengeance against the mob that disfigured him. While the film wasn’t necessarily a commercial hit, it proved popular enough with audiences to spawn two straight-to-video sequels: 1995’s Darkman II: The Return of Durant and Darkman III: Die Darkman Die in 1996. For those movies, Neeson was replaced by Arnold Vosloo and Raimi only returned as a producer. Still, the franchise was well-received enough to inspire comic books, action figures, and video games. There was even an ill-fated Darkman television pilot that was never picked up. Indeed, Darkman has developed somewhat of a cult following since its release and now Raimi is teasing that audiences haven’t seen the last of the character just yet.

Speaking with The Wrap to promote Multiverse of Madness, Raimi was asked what he would think about revisiting the world of Darkman. Not only did Raimi react positively, he said that discussions are already underway for a sequel at Universal. Furthermore, there’s apparently already a producer attached to the project. Universal is talking about a Darkman sequel. There’s a producer attached. I haven’t heard the story yet or gone into it, I’ve been so busy with (Doctor Strange). But I think it’s cool.”

Raimi didn’t specify if he’ll be personally involved, but the fact that a producer is already attached to the project is a good sign that moves are being made on the theoretical sequel. His admitting that he doesn’t know the story’s details suggests he’s not writing the script, but there’s always the possibility that he’ll contribute as a producer or maybe even director. He went so far as to tease casting suggestions in his reply, saying that if Neeson were to reprise the role, “he’d be incredible.”

After delivering the latest blockbuster in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Raimi likely can pick and choose what his next project will be. Many people have already been clamoring for a Spider-Man 4 now that both he and Maguire are officially a part of the MCU, though that’s just hopeful fan speculation at the moment. Whatever his next project is, the fact that he suggested hope for another sequel should be enough to get Darkman fans excited.
